Hello everyone !

Today we're going to talk about the phrase "stay out of the way".

The ground of a tennis court was once made of tiles, which would have given the name of the very ground of the game.

Either he falls trying to catch the ball, or he just loses the game.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the expression "Heads or Tails".

Heads or Tails Under the reign of Saint-Louis, there were still more than eighty private lords in the kingdom who had the right to coin money.

But it was only the king who had the right to mint gold or silver coins.

On one side of the royal coin there was a cross, and on the other side there were pillars, so for a long time the sides of coins were called cross or stack.

Subsequently, the French kings decided to feature their own face in place of the cross, and their arms and coin value on the other.

But the word tails remained for one side and tails for the other.

Hello everyone !

Today we're going to talk about the phrase "setting the table".

Daily expression that is familiar to us but incorrect.

We should say “put the table”, since our tables no longer travel around the house.

In the Middle Ages, rooms did not have very distinct functions as they do today, and the same room could serve as a common room, dining room and bedroom.

Also, more often than not, we "set the table" at mealtime, that is, we brought a large board and trestles.

Hence the use, among the lords, of beautiful tablecloths intended to hide the poverty of the furniture.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the expression "clothes do not make a monk.

" One of the oldest proverbs in the French language.

Meaning: do not be fooled by appearances which are often deceptive.

People in the Middle Ages hated lies and hypocrisy.

Everyone had to look like they really were.

The costumes clearly indicated the social rank of each person.

Women could not wear men's clothes, and vice versa.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the phrase "Make amends".

Meaning: apologize, admit that we were wrong.

In the Middle Ages, when few people knew how to write, any agreement was played on the word given, on the honor pledged, in short, reputation.

So whoever commits a crime, breaks his word to others, must restore his honor first and foremost by amending it.

Honorable fine, therefore, make sense to wash one's name by confessing the truth and asking forgiveness from all.

As an admitted fault was half forgiven, the honorable fine could be accompanied by public punishments to serve as examples.

With time washing one's honor became less fashionable and only the less honorable fine was retained, that is to say the one that is pecuniary.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the phrase "being in the hot seat".

Meaning: to be exposed to the judgment of others, to criticism or to be in a delicate position.

The harness was the small wooden bench on which sat the accused when questioned by his judges.

The seat was very low for psychological and symbolic reasons.

The accused found himself in a position that was both uncomfortable and humiliating.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the expression "for intérieur".

In the Middle Ages, the word took on the technical meaning of jurisdiction and especially ecclesiastical jurisdiction (powers of the Church, in matters of justice, and their extent.)

A distinction was made between the « for intérieur » (the Church could sanction faults committed through confession and penances), and the « for extérieur » (all matters relating to religion, directly or indirectly, were judged by ecclesiastical courts).

The distinction gradually changed meaning over the centuries: internal forum being our conscience which judges us, the external forum, institutions, judges and courts.

Hello everyone !

Today we’re going to talk about the phrase "That’s another pair of sleeves."

This is another matter.

In the Middle Ages, the sleeves of clothes were not sewn together, but simply adjusted at the last moment.

The ladies could, as a sign of attachment, hand their sleeve to their knight, who would wear it on his lance or shield during tournaments.

This amorous pledge has become a symbol of commitment to the point where we have forgotten its aristocratic and gallant origin.

In the Middle Ages, trade associations regulated work by requiring it to be done only in daylight.

However, some masters, to increase the output of their workers, made them work by candlelight, once night had fallen, which was prohibited by the rules.

Hence the expression "moonlighting" to mean working illegally.

Hello everyone !

Today we're going to talk about the phrase "spit in the soup".

We thus learn that blacksmiths used to leave a well-heated horseshoe in front of their shop, in order to laugh at the grimaces of the naive who tried to steal it.

The story's villain's son, Robin, who is in town with his father, doesn't let him fall into the trap, and spits on the horseshoe to check if it's cold. The saliva is immediately brought to a boil.

Back home, the villain is about to eat a good morterual, a kind of bread soup his wife has made.

He spits in the soup to see if it's too hot, but nothing happens.

He immediately puts a huge spoonful in the oven, and is scalded to the guts.

Hence the phrase "spit in the soup", which indicates overdone and, as here, unnecessary caution.

Hello everyone !

Today we are going to talk about the expression "Promise mountains and wonders".

In the Middle Ages, it was said of someone who promised mountains and wonders, that he promised mountains and valleys (that is, valleys).

In the course of time, by a taste for repetition, typical of Old French, the image was forgotten and wonders took the place of valleys, thus reinforcing the meaning of the word mont, instead of completing it as previously.

The old French loved these pairs of words, similar sounds and meanings.

Curiously, many have come down to us: indeed, safe and sound, without faith or law, without fire or place, all fire all flame ...

Hello all ! Our Play with thought of the day comes to us from Galileo.

“The Sun, with all these planets that orbit under its rule, still takes the time to ripen a cluster of reason as if there was nothing more important. "

He is a forerunner of experimental science and of the obligation to validate a theory by experience.

He notably carried out experiments on gravity from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

But it was in astronomy that he built his fame.

Thanks to the astronomical telescope, Galileo was able to observe the planets.

It is to him that we owe the discovery of the landforms of the Moon, the satellites of Jupiter and the spots of the Sun.

Copernicus' ideas revolutionized astronomy and also shook up the ways of thinking and the philosophy of his time, claiming that man was not at the center of the universe.

Hello everyone !

Our play with thought of the day comes to us from a great French poet and writer of French romanticism:

"Nothing is indifferent, nothing is powerless in the universe; an atom can dissolve everything, an atom can save everything! ".

Gérard de Nerval, is a French writer and poet, born May 22, 1808 in Paris, the city where he died January 26, 1855.

Hello everyone !

Our co-game of the day comes from a great doctor and chief of the Sioux tribe:

"The earth does not belong to man, it is man who belongs to the earth".

Sitting Bull (in Lakota: Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake), born around 1831 in present-day South Dakota and died on December 15, 1890 in the Standing Rock Indian reservation, is a tribal chief and physician of the Lakota Hunkpapas (Sioux) .

He is one of the main Amerindians resistant to the US military.

Good day and good game ;)
