Kodama Duo is a 2-player card placement game that takes 30 minutes to play. You'll grow a tree by carefully placing branch cards, creating a warm home for your Kodama!
Players will flip one card per season to define the unique conditions of the round. During the Growth phase, players take turns revealing tree structure cards and dividing them into two piles until each player has added four branch cards to their tree.
In the Kodama phase, players will each choose one of their kodama to live in their tree and score points. The game lasts 3 seasons (12 rounds), and the player who cares most for their Kodama will be remembered for generations!
In Kodama Duo, each round, one player (the splitter) will reveal three branch cards from the deck instead of one. They will then divide these cards into two piles. The other player (the chooser) will select one of the branch piles.
The other pile will go to the divider. Then, both players will add one of the branch cards they received to their tree. The player who received two foundation cards will discard the additional card.
In the Duo version, there are spirit tokens that have the six characteristics of Kodama. As soon as the player who received two foundation cards discards one, the other player receives a spirit token from the discarded foundation card. They choose one of the characteristics of that card and take the corresponding spirit token.
That player then places this token on one of the icons in their tree. This allows for interesting combination interactions as foundations can be shortened or lengthened to increase the combined point potential of future branch slots.
Most of the new Kodama cards and decree cards interact with the spirit tokens and the divider/selector mechanism. Kodama Duo will also allow for six-player play with new rules for branch selection.
Each player will secretly choose from four foundation cards simultaneously, according to the round's playing conditions. Players will also be allowed to place and mark their branch cards simultaneously. This will shorten the downtime that might have been added by including more players.
