Fluttering Souls is a 2-player game with 3 to 5 rounds. In each round, players take turns collecting butterflies to earn victory points, either as a group or individually. The player with the most victory points at the end of a round receives a White Butterfly token: a visit from a lost loved one.

Many years ago, an apprentice merchant named Takahama fell hopelessly in love with Akiko. They became engaged, but Akiko tragically died before they could marry.

Takahama was distraught. He had built a successful life and career, but he couldn't bear to be separated from his love. His devotion to Akiko was such that he gave up his profession and dedicated his life to maintaining the cemetery where she was buried.

For 50 years, Takahama visited Akiko's grave every day with a pure white rose. One day, Takahama became so ill that he could no longer go out. Fearing he was dying, his sister and niece came to care for him. As he lay there motionless, a pure white butterfly delicately landed on his pillow. Annoyed, Takahama's niece tried to chase it away, but it refused to leave the dying man's pillow.

As Takahama took his last breath, the butterfly flew to Akiko's grave and disappeared. White butterflies are believed to be the souls of loved ones who come to visit him. Concerned that Takahama hadn't visited her grave that day, Akiko watched it and didn't leave until its soul had rejoined hers.

Fluttering Souls is a captivating and beautifully illustrated two-player game based on the Japanese legend of the White Butterfly. You compete to collect a kaleidoscope of butterflies in the hope of receiving a visit from the White Butterfly, the soul of a lost loved one. The first player to collect 3 White Butterfly tokens wins.
