In Avant-Garde, the goal is to build a collection of exceptional Cubist works. Each player starts with a deck of ten medium cards: 1s and 2s in six different colors and four high-value cards, each in a different color. Each player draws seven cards, then creates the best possible display by combining colors and values, for example: 11 red, 1 red, 1 purple, 13 purple.
Each card played is worth $1, and players can then buy cards from the gallery piles: a 2 costs $2, a 3 $3, and so on. Once per turn, you can bury a card from the top of a gallery pile, beneath it. If you haven't spent all your money and don't have any coins, take one from the bank; it's worth $1 when you decide to spend it. End your turn by discarding all played cards and those still in your hand, then draw seven cards, shuffling your discard pile if necessary.
Six Patrons, numbered 2 through 7, are in play and grant additional powers to the cards. For example, if you played more than one 2, you have an extra $1 to spend; if you played a 3, you can discard a card from your hand or your play area; if you played a 4, you can change its color or number. Avant Carde offers several sets of Patrons, and you can use cards from the same set or mix them.
Why build this collection? To earn rewards! If you earn at least $6, you get a reward, and the more you earn, the more rewards you get. Earning $11 earns you four rewards. You might be wondering how to earn $11? A Patron 7 lets you draw extra cards each turn, and a Patron 5 lets you earn an extra $1 for every 5 you collect.
When the reward deck is depleted, the player with the most rewards wins the game.
